DETAILS

The Dirty Donut is an event where participants race bicycles on dirt roads in the Allegan County, Michigan area. The race has “donut stops” positioned along each route where participants can choose to stop and eat donuts.  Five minutes is deducted from a rider’s finish time for each donut eaten.  The great thing about this race is that there are several different ways for competitors at all levels of cycling fitness to become winners.

The start and finish will take place on the grounds of the Martin High School, 1556 Chalmers Street, Martin, MI 49070

AWARDS

There are many ways for you to compete in this race.  First decide which distance you want to compete in.  Then decide which race is best for you.  Once you have decided which distance, please look over the “awards page” on our web site to help you determine which division, Donut or Sprint, you wish to race in.

Fat Tire, Single Speed, and Tandems are standalone divisions and are not counted in age division standings.

We anticipate that the first SPRINT racers for the 62, 42, 26, and 16 mile races will finish somewhere around 10:45am.  Please be sure to check the leader boards after they are updated.  Sprint division awards will begin at the awards stage at 12:15pm.  12:00pm is the cut off time for Sprint race awards eligibility on stage.  Sprint age division winners finishing after this will be allowed to collect their award after the awards presentation is complete at the main awards stage. Sprint racers will be able to determine if they have won an award by checking the leader boards at the venue as they are updated.

To be eligible for awards all DONUT EATING riders for the 62, 42, 26, and 16 mile Donut races must finish by 1pm.  Even though you may be shown in the top three before the donut division cutoff time, nothing becomes official until 1:05pm DONUT racers will be able to determine if they have won an award by checking the leader boards at the venue as they are updated. DONUT RACE awards for the 62, 42, 26, and 16 mile Donut races will begin at the awards stage at 1:15pm

Longjohn 100 mile riders must compete withing the time frame allotted each year. The Longjohn 100 is a live tracked race conducted prior to the traditional Dirty Donut Race Day. Awards will be presented to the top 3 Overall Male and Females beginning at 12:15pm on June 20, 2026 on the awards stage. Awards, finisher medals, and finisher jerseys will be mailed to those that do not attend the awards presentations after the event.

AWARDS WILL NOT BE MAILED AFTER THE EVENT FOR THE 16, 26, 42, AND 62 MILE EVENTS.

DIVISIONS

This race will be scored in many ways based on the structure defined on the “awards page” of the web site.  Please review the awards page before registering.

IN RACE ETIQUETTE

The race is designed so that the leaders of each Sprint race distance will come in contact with a very minimal amount of other race riders.  The 62 mile race leaders should not come in contact with anyone from another race.  As the race routes begin to mix back together near the end of the race we ask the slower riders to move to the right side of the roadway and yield to the group of faster riders behind them.  Slower riders do not have to stop, but just yield for safe passing please.

RACE TIMING

Mac’s Sports Timing will be providing our race day timing and results.  Results will be posted periodically throughout the event.  IMPORTANT NOTE – Because of the nature of this race, the results can change dramatically in the Donut Race Divisions until the cut off time has been met.

MERCHANDISE

When registering, you can also order race merchandise that is distributed at the race. You can also check out our merchandise page to order jerseys, t-shirts, and other merchandise items from past races that are available year round.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the key to making this event happen.  We offer FREE race entries to anyone who brings a friend to volunteer. If you would like to volunteer please send and email with your contact information to dirtydonutrace@gmail.com

RULES

Safety should always be on your mind.  Yes, this is a race, but it is a fun race.  Please think of your safety as well as your competitor’s safety when competing in this event.

  • Do not fold, bend, curve, or alter race number plates in any way.  The number with the computer chip sticker on the back must be tied to the front of your bike without bending it so that it can be read.  If altered you are subject to being disqualified.  The other number must be pinned to your shirt or jersey in an area where you do not mind having someone touch you.  Donut Volunteers will be marking how many donuts you eat on this race number.
  • If you are in a donut eating division, you MUST eat at least one donut to qualify for awards.
  • NO ELECTRIC/MOTOR ASSISTED BIKES, with a few exceptions. We are allowing motor assisted recumbent 3 wheel bikes, also known as adaptive bicycles meant for those with disabilities. If interested you MUST contact us via email prior to registering for more details.
  • NO aero handlebars (Great for time trials, but become dangerous when riding in a pack if a crash occurs)
  • Any rider who follows/drafts a motor vehicle will be disqualified
  • Helmets are mandatory for this event.
  • NO headphones allowed while riding.  You need to hear what is going on around you in this event.
  • IT IS THE RACER’S RESPONSIBILITY TO FOLLOW THE MAP AND KNOW THEIR COURSE.  The entire course is marked with directional signs, paint arrows on the edge of the road, and confidence dots painted on the side of the road after a turn.  Corner worker volunteers and Law Enforcement will also be present on some corners and/or intersections on the racecourse to direct you, but it is ultimately your responsibility to stay on the route.  We encourage all riders to study their maps and download the course maps for navigation computers beforehand.
  • Although considered a race riders must still follow Michigan laws of the roads.  This includes stopping at stop signs.
  • You must finish the race with all of the donuts you consumed while in the race still in your stomach.  If you can’t hold them down, you will unfortunately be DISQUALIFIED.
  • For safety reasons we ask slower riders to move to the side of the roadway and yield to the group of riders behind them.  This is for the safety of both the faster and slower groups of riders.  Faster riders are asked to call out to slower riders and advise them of your passing intentions prior to overtaking them.  The most accepted way of doing this is to call out “ON YOUR LEFT” as you approach a slower rider.
  • For safety as well as courtesy to your fellow riders, if you have to stop and walk your bike up a hill, please do this on the right side of the road and leave the left open for those very fast climbers.
  • Fat Tire Bikes – To qualify for the division your tires must be at least 3.7 inches (94mm) wide.
  • You must be present for the awards presentation to receive your awards.  We will not send awards to you after the race.

RACE STAGING

Please see the race schedule page to see when staging starts for your distance. The start area will be marked with average speed signs.  0-12mph, 13-15mph, 16-18mph, 19-21mph, and 22mph plus.  Please line up behind the sign that is most appropriate for the speed that you anticipate to go in the race. And get ready to race.

DONUT STOPS & RULES

Donut stops are marked on our race route maps.  There will be a sign signifying that there is a donut stop ahead prior to each donut stop on the route.  The sign will have an arrow to indicate what side of the road the stop will be on.  If in a group of riders, please verbally indicate your intentions and move to that side of the road if you wish to stop for donuts, (without crossing the perceived center line until you are ready to turn into the donut stop if the stop is on the left).  If you’re not going to stop for donuts please move to the side of the road opposite of the donut stop and continue riding past it, (again, don’t cross the center line).  The intent here is to not have a crash incident at a donut stop.  This will be of the most importance as the group approaches the first donut stop and the possibility of a large group of riders being together is significant.  If you’re going to ride past a donut stop, please keep an eye out for those rejoining the race.  If leaving a donut stop, check the road for traffic before entering back into the race.

Once at a donut stop, you are allowed to take a maximum of three donuts at a time.  You must consume all of those donuts before being given any more.  There is no limit on how many donuts you can eat at each stop.  A “Donut Volunteer” will distribute donuts and will mark your race number with how many you have consumed.  If you take more than you can eat, you must return to a “Donut Volunteer” to return the uneaten donuts to them.  The “Donut Volunteer” will deduct those uneaten donuts from your total amount consumed.  Anyone who discards donuts without having them deducted from their race number total will be DISQUALIFIED.  Anyone taking donuts outside of the donut stop area, this includes bathrooms, and leaving on your bike with them in your hand or a pocket will be DISQUALIFIED.

In addition to donuts and water, there are portable bathrooms available at each donut stop.

LOCKER ROOMS AND BATHROOMS

Locker rooms, showers and bathrooms are available inside of the Martin High School for your use throughout the event.  Please do not store any of your belongings in the locker rooms as the Dirty Donut and Martin Public Schools are not responsible for their security. Please be respectful and clean up after yourself, as the locker rooms are a privilege that can be taken away in the future if not respected.

ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS

Although we plan to race rain or shine, the Dirty Donut staff reserves the right to delay, postpone, or cancel the start in the event of extreme inclement weather or unsafe conditions.  We will do everything in our control to complete this event on the scheduled day, but if canceled due to weather, there are no refunds.

TRANSFERS AND REFUNDS

Transfers are allowed.  No refunds or deferments for the flowing year.  Bikereg offers race insurance (similar to trip or ticket insurance) for this event.  We encouraged those who register early to consider it.

LONGJOHN 100 DETAILS

THIS IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE GRAVEL RACE – The Longjohn 100 cuts straight through the heart of the Allegan State Forest, a place that doesn’t care how strong you are or how deep your gearing goes. The roads out here are roads in name only, rutted, raw, and often buried in sand. You’ll find yourself fighting the bike more than riding it. About halfway through, you’ll drop onto two miles of singletrack, which you will be thankful for as it is a brief reprieve from the torturous sandy forest roads. But don’t get comfortable, the narrow trail will keep you on edge, demanding precision and punishing every lapse in focus. Every mile of this route is designed to test what’s left of your legs, lungs, and willpower. Don’t worry, we saved a good portion of the elevation for the last 20 miles! This isn’t about chasing a PR or a KOM. This is about surviving one of the hardest routes in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. If you finish, you’ll know why we gave you over a month to successfully complete it and earn this jersey.

The Longjohn 100 will be open for competition from May 1, 2026 – June 14, 2026 at 11:59pm. Map links will be available for download on the “Course Maps” page of the website prior to May 1st. The true distance of this race is between 100 and 115 miles. The race is timed via a live tracking app that must be downloaded to your cell phone and used when you make your attempt. The cost of the app is included in your registration price and instructions on how to use it will be sent after you register. The app will track each racer to ensure that they completed the entire course and will provide a finish time. Major cellular carriers (i.e. ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile) should provide adequate coverage to properly track your attempt, smaller carriers (i.e. Mint Mobile) may have a insignificant coverage on course to provide an accurate result.

The race is not supported or marked with directional signs.  You may have a support crew assist you, but they are not allowed to lead or follow you on the route in a vehicle. Aero bars and drafting are allowed, but no electric or motor assisted bikes are permitted.  You must be 16 years or older to enter this division.

Once the Longjohn 100 competition opens on May 1, you may make as many attempts as you wish to record your best finish.  Only your best finishing time will be counted for results.  When you register you will receive an email on how to download the Trackleaders Ping tracking app and instructions on how to use it.  You have to provide the following info – First and Last Name, Email, Phone, Event name (2026 Dirty Donut Longjohn 100), Date you plan to start, Time you plan to start.  If you do not start within the timeframe you provide, the tracking may not be recorded properly.  In addition to using the Trackleaders Ping App, we recommend that you also use Strava as a backup when racing and provide us with that completed ride info if requested.  For 2nd, 3rd or more attempts you will re-register using the same Trackleaders registration link page that you are emailed after you registered on bikereg.  On that form it will ask if this is your 1st, 2nd, 3rd attempt.  The system will automatically create a new entry for them for each attempt without deleting your old one from the system.

Everyone who registers for the Longjohn 100 will be emailed a coupon code that they can use to get a 20% discount on racing one of the other Dirty Donut race distances on the 3rd Saturday in June.

Overall male and female winners will earn a 1st place medal, champions jersey, and a 2027 race entry.  Overall 2nd & 3rd will earn medals.  This is in addition to the event shirt, finisher medal, and finishers jersey that will be provided to each registered racer who completes the race in under 7.5 hours. Qualifying finishers will be mailed a finisher medal, jersey, event shirt, and overall awards, unless present at the 12:15pm 6/20/26 Dirty Donut awards presentation at Martin High School.
